- Tell us, when did mind-body first bend you to it's will? I had my first yoga class in 2005, a Beginner's Series class, but it was not until I began a regular practice at the Blue did I truly begin to feel yoga and its benefits not only on the mat but off. The feeling of elation and peace that I found on the mat through continual practice and pure intent led me to incorporating a yoga mind set off the mat and that is when I became "bent"!
- Besides your obvious coolness, what makes you qualified to teach? "Obvious coolness", huh? (ed. did my question stutter?) Well, I hope it is my love and passion to share with others the continuous and myriad gifts yoga has give to me. I have been avidly studying and devoting my attention to the Kundalini practice and lifestyle and have attended the Breathe Into Recovery continuing education sessions as well as my 200 hr. certification.
- What other things are you qualified to do (besides train dolphins ... we're all qualified to do that)? I hold a Bachelors of Arts in English and a Certificate in Technical Writing. I am well into my Master's Degree in Public Administration although the practice and study of yoga has taken me away from that path . . . at least for the time being. Professionally, I spent a few years in the corporate human resources field and found I LOVE training and encouraging employees, perhaps that is why I gravitate toward teaching yoga.
- What can we expect to see, hear and do in your classes?
Currently, I teach regularly the Sunday Kundalini practice and you can expect to become familiar with the On Namo opening chant and the Long Time Sunshine closing song, as well as, continuously employing the Sutnam mantra throughout the practice.
I encourage my students to practice with their eyes closed and focused on the third eye to keep the practice internal and assist in bringing you back into yourself, which this busy world so often keeps us from. I enjoy offering students the option to employ breath work throughout specific sets in class such as Breath of Fire, breath retention, Canyon Breath, and deep belly breathing. The purpose of kundalini yoga is to quickly move the energy throughout 8 chakras (yes! kundalini recognizes an eigth chakra) to obtain a medititative state so each class will be focused on a higher impact, aerobic set typically inspired by Yogi Bhajan to address a specific issue.
I will then lead students in usually a guided meditation incorporating visualization, singing, chant, scent, or hearing. When I sub Hatha classes, I LOVE bringing lessons on the mat off the mat and asking my students to physically incorporate an intention at the beginning of class for alignment or stability and then at the end of class encouraging my students on how they can take this same concept into their daily lives.
- What pose/move do you dig the most and why? Side Plank Pose or Side Crow because these asanas (poses) were the first poses I practiced where I saw the progress in myself through yoga and came to realize it is a continuous, joyous, liberating practice!
- If you could push a button and remove a pose/move from history, which one and why? Balancing bear because I growl enough all ready!
- Like, what's your sign man? Capricorn and in Chinese I am a Cock. Right on with almost all of the Caps and Cocks personality traits (unfortunately in some and fortunately in others)
- What are 3 things that make you smile real big and cheesy? (ed. no fart jokes) Dark Humor - saucy wit that can be shocking but just so true its hilarious! Other people's creativity-seeing someone else's vision and being like "Wow! Never thought of that and that is cool!" Sounds and sights of nature and creation, nothing is so beautiful or inspiring as the world around us.
- What is your favorite quote when you're in need of a little inspiration? Hope is the thing with feathers. That perches in the soul ... --Emily Dickinson (I LOVE Birds!)
- If you could do anything to change the world, what would it be? Change myself and the world will respond in like. (ed. revised: "Change myself [to be more like Dirk] and the world ... " )
- Any other interesting information you would like to share with the nice people reading this here Bio? (ed. apparently not)
