Sivananda Yoga, after teachings of Swami Sivananda, is a form of hatha yoga that focuses on preserving the health and wellness of the practitioner. Simply put, a Sivananda-style yoga practice aims to retain the vitality of the body, retard the decaying process and prevent disease by simply and naturally cultivating the body. The philosophy of the Sivananda tradition can be summarized in 5 principles: Proper breathing (pranayama), proper exercise (asana), proper relaxation (savasana), proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation.

A Sivananda class typically begins with Savasana followed by breathing exercises, Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath) andAnuloma Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breath). This is followed by several rounds of S?rya namask?ra before moving into the standard program of 12 basic asanas. The traditional program may be followed flexibly by the instructor to allow for some variation.  In any case, expect an energizing practice that is remarkable in its balance, simplicity and totality.  Mantras are used throughout class to tap into Divine energy and wisdom, and in acknowledgement to the Sivananda lineage. Sivananda Yoga teachers are all certified graduates of the Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Course.

The tradition also emphasizes the importance of Karma Yoga, or selfless service to others.
